Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs stolen in Instagram phishing attack

As told by Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) developers on Monday, hackers breached the popular nonfungible token, or NFT, collection’s official Instagram page and shared links to a fake airdrop with the project’s followers.Crypto enthusiasts who connected their MetaMask wallets to the scam website were subsequently drained of their Ape NFTs. It appears that the attack was planned to coincide with the one-year anniversary of the launch of the BAYC collection, thus increasing the “perceived credibility” of the phishing link.Unconfirmed reports on social media indicate that approximately 100 NFTs were stolen during the phishing attack. Based on data from CoinGecko, the floor price of each BAYC NFT is around 139 Ether (ETH), or $400,726. Thus, if the reports are authentic, more than $40 million worth of assets could have been lost in the attack. However, the numbers may only represent the lower end of the estimate as it is based on floor price. There is no mint going on today. It looks like BAYC Instagram was hacked. Do not mint anything, click links, or link your wallet to anything.— Bored Ape Yacht Club (@BoredApeYC) April 25, 2022At the time of publication, it is unclear how hackers gained access to the BAYC official Instagram. While social media users point out the importance of two-factor authentication as an effective deterrent against unauthorized logins, others say that such methods are not entirely foolproof and can be, in fact, compromised via a SIM-card swap.BAYC has grown to become an all-time favorite NFT collection in the crypto realm, generating more than $1 billion in sales in 2021. The collection’s supply is fixed at 10,000 NFTs. More than 38,748 ETH worth of Apes were traded on OpenSea in the past 30 days.

Binance recovers $5.8M in funds connected to Ronin bridge exploit

Via a Twitter post on Friday, Changpeng Zhao, CEO of Binance, said that the cryptocurrency exchange recovered $5.8 million spread over 86 accounts in digital assets moved to the exchange by Lazarus Group. Last month, the North Korean cyber-criminal group allegedly stole 173,600 Ether (ETH) and 25.5 million USD Coin (USDC), worth over $600 million at the time, belonging to Axie Infinity’s Ronin bridge. As of Friday, the wallet address associated with the Ronin has around $280 million in digital assets remaining. Blockchain forensics company Elliptic recently uncovered that the hackers have been sending the money to centralized exchanges and cryptocurrency trail-mixer decentralized application, or DApp, Tornado Cash. In addition, it appears the hackers also swapped the stolen USDC for Ethereum on decentralized exchanges, or DEXs. Possibly in response to alleged acts of money laundering, Uniswap DEX announced it was screening addresses that might be associated with moving “hacked or stolen funds” based on intelligence provided by TRM Labs.Similarly, via Chainalysis, Tornado Cash is blocking wallets linked to illicit activity from accessing its DApp.However, as told by its founder, Roman Semenov, the new screening process only blocks users from accessing its DApp user interface and does not prevent the movement of funds into its underlying smart contract. Despite the incident, Axie Infinity creator Sky Mavis recently closed a $150 million funding round led by Binance. The funds will partly be used to reimburse investors who suffered losses in the exploit. In addition, the remaining amounts will be compensated via Sky Mavis’ own money. If the stolen funds are not fully recovered within two years, the Axie decentralized autonomous organization will vote on the next steps for the treasury.

On Friday, Twitter and Stripe announced the rollout of crypto payouts for Stripe Connect. As told by the two companies, a select group of creators on Twitter will soon be able to receive their earnings on the platform in the form of the USD Coin (USDC) stablecoin. Payments will occur via the Polygon (MATIC) network, a layer-2 blockchain known for its low fees, fast transaction speed, innovative zero-knowledge technology and integration with Ethereum (ETH).As a centralized platform, content creators and freelancers would first need to pace Know Your Customer onboarding checks conducted by Stripe. Afterward, they can manage their account details, track real-time earnings and upcoming payouts into their crypto wallets.By the end of the year, Twitter and Stripe plan to expand the program to over 120 countries. Regarding the development, Esther Crawford, Twitter’s product lead for creators, commented: “We’re excited to begin offering crypto payouts to creators via Stripe, so they have more choice in how they get paid.”At the time of publication, Twitter is being targeted in a “hostile takeover” by billionaire entrepreneur and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. As told by Musk, his top pledges, should his bid for the company succeed, are to cut down on the cryptocurrency scam tweets spreading across the platform and perhaps introduce a Dogecoin (DOGE) payment option for its Twitter Blue monthly subscription service.Introducing crypto payouts: https://t.co/xJnpLmsBKn. pic.twitter.com/PJQ2oTaU7J— Stripe (@stripe) April 22, 2022

Shiba Inu blacklists user for drawing hate symbol with metaverse land

In a statement posted by Shiba Inu (SHIB) Metaverse developers late Tuesday, it appears that a user’s wallet address has been blacklisted for drawing a swastika using the project’s Metaverse land. The team at Shiba Inu wrote:”SHIB: The Metaverse will place the the wallet identifying the [hate symbol] violation on a blacklist, meaning it will never be able to participate in any and all areas of the platform.”The ordeal began on April 12 with the launch of the Shiba Inu Metaverse land sale, with approximately 36,000 out of 100,000 plots up for grabs. Via Shib.io, crypto enthusiasts who locked LEASH (the ecosystem token) and Shiboshi nonfungible tokens were able to bid on Metaverse lands, which were square plots, for 0.2 to 1.0 Ether (ETH) each. Each time a user bid on a piece of land, it turned the color from “grey” to “black” when viewed from the map.On April 15, however, members of the Shiba Inu Discord community discovered that a malignant user was bidding on land in a way that formed a swastika. Yet, when the news broke out, SHIB holders quickly dug into their pockets and began bidding on land around the symbol (thereby shading their color) until it eventually turned into a “window” shape.Enlarged image of the SHIB Metaverse land map on April 15 | Source: DiscordIt appears that most SHIB enthusiasts support the developers’ decision to block the malignant user and create a community more heavily curated toward acceptance and positivity. Twitter user “DMCREDI” wrote: “No slippery slope…[regarding the ban] this is their house, and they choose the language that is acceptable as we would our own household. Simple.”Dear #ShibArmy,Please take a moment to review the following guidelines. The safety of our community, and partners is our highest priority. A small update to our Metaverse and the actions that will be taken for creating a negative environment within the space. pic.twitter.com/4tBD3tx6Ww— SHIB: The Metaverse (@ShibTheMV) April 19, 2022
