Community anticipation builds for Otherside's First Trip demo run

The Otherside, a gamified metaverse project associated with the Bored Ape Yacht Club, is scheduled to deploy a technical demonstration of the first stage of the Otherside roadmap on Sunday, July 17 at 4 pm UTC.The First Trip experience will be exclusively accessible to Otherdeed land owners, known as Voyagers, and has been described by the platform as a “celebration of what’s to come and an opportunity for Voyagers to gather, explore and plan.” The company indicated that thousands of users could participate in the event, navigating through the curated arena of play that has been specifically designed for the test, as well as guinea-pigging the “3D, hi-res Voyager prototypes that can walk, run, jump and emote,” and a “private, tokengated live stream,” among other novel features.  An Otherdeed asset for the Otherside has sustained a floor price of circa 2.9 ETH over the past few weeks, with 100,000 assets in supply and 35,000 owners at the time of writing. The First Trip demo arrives less than a week after the occurrence of two load tests on July 6 and 9 with the intention of assessing the technical boundaries of the Otherside platform, and the collaborative dynamics with the Improbable team. The events witnessed frenetic crowds of faceless avatars with overhead name tags and reactionary emojis sprinting, dancing and acrobatically flipping around a blank-white universe as giant moderators towered over and bellowed instructions. Users were advised to engage in activities to test the gaming experience, such as inputting their age, experience score and objectives for their gameplay, before choruses of degenerates relayed calls of “Otherside” and “We love Koda.”Twitter user and owner of BAYC #8412, null.eth and Sandbox ambassador allo.eth, each published videos on Twitter, which perfectly captured the experience of the test event.Despite the visually comedic anthill crabs-in-a-bucket appearance of the load tests, there was widespread praise throughout the community for the visual rendering quality, spatial audio and overall experience, with high anticipations for the upcoming First Trip and future full-scale rollouts. Co-founder of digital fashion brand RTFKT Studios, Benito replied by stating that: “2.5K people were connected and moving live. That’s huge, the tech has been proven live with gated access and real people.” While BAYC co-founder, Gargamel, known as Garga within the community, shared: “Had about 2.5k concurrent users running around in the neutral space. Tons of great info compiled to make sure First Trip goes smoothly, and [we are] taking all your notes from Discord as well.” Less favorably, some compared the uncanny design similarities to the starter templates available through game engines such as the Unreal Engine. It remains to be seen whether Yuga Labs intends on building and developing their own game engine to launch the Otherside and innovate on the future of metaverse gaming, or simply utilize a pre-existing model.Related: Otherside NFTs fall below mint price while cheaper ETH sees sales volume boostFor many participants of the NFT ecosystem, mentions of the Otherside may still be synonymized with the gas-war minting saga and subsequent financial begrudgery in late April. However, since then, the publication of an eight-part roadmap for the Obelisk mission, and consistently executed testnets have cultivated a more positive narrative around the metaverse project.

NFT volume sees yearly low in June, but first-time buyers remain consistent

Blockchain analytics service Nansen has published its NFT Indexes Report for the second quarter of 2022, showing the market dynamics and quantitative performance of nonfungible tokens (NFTs) over the last three months. The report identifies and determines key factors contributing to the well-documented NFT bear market, including Ethereum-based volume and transactional metrics, as well as market capitalization, among others. Commencing with an analysis of NFT volume statistics on Ethereum measured per week across a monthly time frame, the report found that June recorded the lowest figure of the calendar year. Calculated across six marketplaces — OpenSea, LooksRare, Mints, X2Y2, 0x, and CryptoPunks — the NFT space, at least on an economic level, experienced a considerable depreciation throughout June to close to approximately 600,000 Ether (ETH) in trading per week.In stark comparison, the previous month of May recorded around 1.3 million in weekly ETH volume, circa 900,000 of which occurred on OpenSea alone.Monthly NFT volume. Source: NansenDespite this short-mid term deflationary environment, beacons of long-term optimism and assurances as to the long-term demand of the space flicker when looking at the charts of returning monthly users, and first-time buyers.Related: NFT markets slump as weekly sales volume dives 30%The former has encountered sizeable fluctuations since the turn of the year, from 55,000 returning monthly users in February to 35,000 in May, before rising once again to around 48,000 in June. First-time buyers on the other hand have remained relatively consistent at the 5,000 user mark since March this year, suggesting that the appetite for NFTs on Ethereum as a speculative mechanism, and medium of entertainment, has sustained a modest appeal.Monthly NFT returning vs. first-time buyers. Source: NansenThis long-term bullish thesis is corroborated by the monthly user count, which remains at the 650,000 level albeit a small decrease from last month’s 700,000.Related: Ethereum analytics firm Nansen acquires DeFi tracker Ape BoardAssessing indexes across the breadth of the NFT space, the report stated that all “recorded a bounce in June (when measured in ETH), except for Gaming NFTs at the end of Q2 2022.”Blue Chip-10, Social-100, and Metaverse-20 were the highest performance NFT ETH indexes across the month of June, with the latter making the most notable strides to reach in excess of 1,000 on the index scoring system.Upon witnessing this slight uptick in index performance across June, Nansen stated, “NFTs’ trend reversal started earlier than the broad cryptocurrency market,” before noting that a “risk-off sentiment is still highly evident in the NFT market and the limited liquidity […] hints that this uptrend might not sustain.”NFT indexes performance year-to-date ending in Q2. Web3 will unite users from social media platforms, says Aave exec

Web3, the third iteration of the internet, is rapidly approaching the consumer mainstream with the promise of disrupting the status quo of digital interactions and creating a new paradigm for democratic engagement. Lens Protocol is a decentralized social graph built by Aave with the vision of cultivating a Web3 environment in which creators are the primary point of focus. Centered around nonfungible tokens (NFT), Lens hosts capabilities for developers to build applications analogous to social media, as well as analytic tools, integrations of decentralized finance (DeFi) functions, such as loans and staking, and user-governed decentralized autonomous organizations (DAO).A Lens Protocol mission statement was cryptographically signed and endorsed by a number of high-profile figures from within the crypto and DeFi space, including Ryan Selkis, Ryan Sean Adams, Gmoney, Camila Russo, Andrew Wang and Josh Ong, among others. Cointelegraph sat down with Christina Beltramini, head of growth and partnerships at Aave, during the NFT.NYC in June to discuss the intentional growth trajectory of Lens, social graphs in the era of Web3 and the future of content creation. After working for the likes of JPMorgan and Tidal, Beltramini assumed the role of global business development of music partnerships at prominent social media platform TikTok in mid-2019. It was during this time she witnessed what she described as an innate lack of autonomy and bureaucratic constrictions that TikTok content creators experience when using the platform, most notably during the frequent requests to reinstate mistakenly deactivated accounts. The evolution of Web3, coupled with her intrinsic desire to support the artistic expressions of content creators, was enough to convince Beltramini to pursue contributions toward a decentralized social future. Excited to welcome Christina, coming from TikTok to Aave fam to lead the growth for the decentralized social graph, and all the innovation coming out of Aave. 2022 is going to push web3 closer to the mainstream https://t.co/SksQVdq2QQ— stani.lens (,) (@StaniKulechov) December 21, 2021Over the last few years, the industry has witnessed the emergence and adoption of digital identity services such as Ethereum Name Service (ENS) domains, Solana Name Service domains and NFT.com, among others. Beltramini shared her thoughts on how the profile aspect of Lens Protocol compares and differs from those examples:“Name services don’t connect wallets to wallets or social signals. With ENS, I will know what your wallet is and I’ll be able to transfer to you, but I won’t actually be able to see the connections within your wallet. So, with Lens, your profile’s an NFT, [and] when you follow someone, that’s an NFT as well. And that’s what ties the association together.”Profile NFTs are one of the core components of the Lens model. Issued to an individual’s wallet address, they aim to serve as a Web3 headquarters of sorts, enabling self-custody of data, the ability to publish authentic pieces of content on-chain, and built-in governance capacities should users wish to construct their own DAO. Recent: Hodlers and whales: Who owns the most Bitcoin in 2022?Modules and logic functions open up an entire ecosystem of interoperable NFTs. Other users of the platform can attain a FollowNFT for following a profile and CollectNFT for collecting unique pieces of content. Additionally, mirroring enables users to share, or essentially reblog, content while acknowledging the original owner. By democratizing user data and attaching NFTs to the individual action, Lens considerably advances upon the traditional experiences of social media, commerce and digital consumer interaction. Digital rootsThe name Lens was inspired by the Lens Culinaris, the green flowering plant whose seeds produce the lentil. Beltramini expressed that this choice of branding was a conscious, deliberative decision to metaphorically symbolize “owning your digital roots” and nurturing a ground-up ecosystem that “we cultivate together as the community” before stating:“We are the application layer, and having multiple protocols that speak together to build different experiences and applications on Lens is really with the community from the decision making and how the protocol will be governed.”Societal concerns around the environmental expenditure of Bitcoin (BTC) mining and NFT minting have sparked decisive behaviors from crypto companies seeking to remain at the cultural forefront. Lens Protocol was built on the Polygon network to focus inherently on “scalability and environmental” factors, Beltramini said. She also added that there was a pre-existing “deep relationship between Polygon and the Aave companies on the DeFi side” so that “when the protocol was being built a year and a half ago, it was really the only scaling solution.”The social graphBeltramini noted the concept of social graphs, an interconnected map of connections formed by people and mutual friends in a dispersed network. An application built within the Lens ecosystem called Cultivator depicts this network as an observatory of night-sky constellations. Decentralized social media has arguably become a buzzphrase within Web3 over the past few years, but according to Beltramini, the vision for Lens incorporates the truest values and principles of Web3.“We believe at the Aave companies that your social content and network should be a public good, and there shouldn’t be large moats that gatekeep you to different platforms,” she said. Beltramini also raised the significance of users being able to control parameters of privacy, maintaining numerous personas across different platforms on a single social graph. In traditional social media, this would be understood as one type of personality for work contacts on Linkedin, while others for family and friends on Instagram.Asserting the point of self-custody, she continued, “We won’t be only using three platforms. We can use whatever platforms we decide and have the ability to truly digitally exit a platform.”“I still have Facebook purely because I have my contacts from 10 years ago at college, but not because I align myself with the values of that platform, or I want to be on Facebook. It’s because my social graph is there. So, we’ll dispel the notion of being tied to a platform just because your social graph is there.”Lens has registered over 100 applications on its server to date. Often, such protocols can have strict application processes or eligibility criteria for developers to pass. The Lens model does have some basic entry points but is largely open. Beltramini said:“Right now in Web2, it’s very hard to start a new social application because you essentially have the cold start issue bringing people into the funnel. So, the idea [with Lens] is that developers will be able to more easily build for the experience versus growth hacking for the social graph and spending millions of dollars in CPA [cost per action] spend.”The most popular application on Lens at the time of writing is Lenster, a permissionless, decentralized social media most closely comparable to Twitter in terms of its user interface and everyday experience but gaining traction as an alternative model in the space. Recent: Liquid markets are healthy markets, says Kairon Labs co-founderIn principle, Web3 social platforms will grant creators the liberal autonomy to own and govern their work like never before. Artists and even journalists will not be stringently tied to the platforms or publications they publish on but will have the opportunity to foster and sustain their own communities.Integrating NFTs enables the creator to fully capitalize on the data metrics extracted from their profile, offering a more tailored, personable and unique experience to their audience, while retaining monetization rewards in instances of virality. Beltramini concluded by stating that “Web3 social is going to accelerate different experiences because of the growth hacking, community building, and open-source nature.”

NFT.NYC — How the Web3 space is validating the work of digital artists

Following the conclusion of the fourth annual NFT.NYC conference, attendees took the opportunity to reflect upon a week of artistic inspiration, community networking and developer innovation from within the nonfungible token (NFT) space.A sequel to last year’s popular debut, The Digital Diaspora event on June 19 served as a dedicated exhibition, panel discussion, and fundraiser to amplify the voices and creative talents of artists of color in the NFT space. The event was a collaboration between the renowned skyscraper photographer DrifterShoots and youthful rising-star artist Diana Sinclair, in partnership with sponsors MetaMask and Samsung, and was hosted at the Samsung 837 hub in the Meatpacking District of Manhattan, New York on Father’s Day and Juneteenth. Hosted by Community Manager at MetaMask, Faith Love, panelists included Diana Sinclair, Emonee LaRussa, Andre O’Shea, Elise Swopes, Cory Van Lew and a cameo stage appearance from DrifterShoots.June 19, known commonly as Juneteenth, is one of the most culturally significant days of the American calendar, marking the historic moment in 1865 when the last African Americans were emancipated from slavery in Galveston, Texas. Nowadays, the federal holiday of Juneteenth serves as a poignant reminder to consciously reflect on the atrocities of the past, but it’s also an opportunity to amplify the societal narrative around cultural diversity and representation, as well as celebrate the modern accomplishments of people of color. The Digital Diaspora — with “diaspora” referring to the global migration and displacement of people of similar culture or origins — was a celebration of Black culture, aiming to bring “awareness to issues of racism and inequality, while highlighting the beauty of the art birthed from these ever-present struggles,” according to the website. “The Digital Diaspora is an art show that celebrates Black culture and the people who design it, elevating voices that often go unheard and giving a platform to those less seen. By displaying and celebrating the artists chosen and through the charity selected, we push forward to design and build a future that truly welcomes Black art in its truest form.” The Digital Diaspora event was attended in person by Cointelegraph’s NFT reporter, Tom Farren, as a part of his week-long reporting duties at the NFT.NYC conference.Honoured to be listening to this conversation at the Digital Diaspora event w/ @DrifterShoots @dianaesinclair @Em0n33y + more. pic.twitter.com/3SAEmD2Tm1— Tom Farren (@tomfarrencrypto) June 19, 2022Pictured Left to Right: Faith Love, Diana Sinclair, Emonee LaRussa, Andre O’Shea, Elise Swopes, Cory Van Lew.Sinclair shared insights into the inspiration and origin story of a recent piece of work titled “You Cant Smooth A Crumpled Paper Or A Wrinkled Heart” in collaboration with musician and producer Reuel Williams. “It was a very intense art piece that took a lot of time to make. This piece was a lot about the process of it, actually, rather than exactly the end artwork,” Sinclair stated before continuing: “I created a video collage of this friend of mine [where] she’s breathing and moving. I printed out each frame of the video, crumpled it up with my brother and flattened out each one, so now it’s like a wrinkled piece of paper. Then, I scanned and turned it into a stop motion video, and my mother created a poem to go with it.” Williams was instrumental in evolving the piece to a “whole other level,” said Sinclair. The cascading sonics of the musical soundtrack provide a structural intensity to the visual imagery, complementing the narrative of progression in the face of adversity. “You Cant Smooth A Crumpled Paper Or A Wrinkled Heart” On auction till Monday afternoon as part of the Digital Diaspora pic.twitter.com/oNBkw2MgJE— Diana Sinclair (@dianaesinclair) June 25, 2022

“This piece is about persistence and how even though we — meaning Black people in this country — have been wrinkled, have been flattened, have gone through so much struggle, that we still persist, and we still continue. So, it’s a looping video,” said Sinclair. An accompanying poem was written for the piece by Sinclair’s mother, Leia which can be viewed here. The final four lines read: “We lift wrinkled hearts to the sun for healing / While we show beautiful shades / Of smooth unbothered shea butter skin / To the world.” The Sinclair and Williams collaborative piece is one of nine that was displayed at the event and is currently under auction. Others include Yacht Lounge by Cory Van Lew, Bask in the Glow by Elise Swopes, and One Decision Away by Andre O’Shea, among others. Related: Crypto secures a place in the African American sagaAndre O’Shea spoke with eloquence on the subject of Black representation within the NFT space, sharing his belief that progress exists in the form of an infinite symbol where when one circle — depicting an artist’s career or creative contribution — ends, the next circle continues the cycle for the next generation.“Becoming an artist in the Web3 space, I see how validated we are as digital artists now [because it] gives us this platform. But also, speaking to the new opportunities that it gives us is much kind of like what Diane is doing now — creating more spaces for us, create bigger spaces for us, actually laying down that path.”The everlasting ability to expand the branches of opportunity and uplift new creators and voices is a significant benefit in the Web3 space compared to its predecessor, claimed O’Shea. Emonee LaRussa, a two-time Emmy award-winning motion graphics artist, and founder of the nonprofit project, Jumpstart Designers, utilized her time portion of the panel to publicly announce her curation of an upcoming event on Nov. 5 in Los Angeles at SuperChief Gallery. She also shared her philosophy behind Jumpstart Designers, and the ways in which the educational program is supporting young creators from underserved communities develop their digital skills on Adobe Creative Cloud, and gain access to necessary computing equipment. “This has been a dream of mine since I was a kid. I didn’t grow up with a whole lot of money, and being in digital art, I had realized that […] me experiencing not having access really made me realize how reliant my dreams were on money.” “And so, I wanted to change the future of digital art. So that is our motto: change the future of digital art. Because we really believe that by bringing these kids on, you’ll see new experiences, new stories that you’ve never seen before, and they won’t be limited to what they can create.” In 2021, 25-year-old LaRussa mentored six emerging artists as a part of the Voice NFT Residency to create and auction their own NFT artworks. All of the $38,742 raised to-date has been donated to low-income children seeking to increase their digital literacy and animation skills. “We all know, digital art is very expensive. And how many kids out there are just so talented, so creative and don’t even have the opportunity? NFTs have changed our life and how many opportunities NFTs brings for us, they’re just not even in question for that. And so, we want to change that.” Invited onto the stage from his seat in the audience, DrifterShoots, commonly referred to as Drift, shared his gratitude for the approximate 1,000 people in physical attendance.“This means the world to us,” he stated. “You know, the space can be a lot of smoke and mirrors at times — people playing with ‘pretend money’ and things like that. But I think at the end of the day as artists, especially as Black artists, with purposes and real intentions, we want our art, our lives, our stories to make a clear impact in the world.”
