Myspace founder predicts blockchain gaming to be ‘dominant place’ for socializing

While many gamers are critical of blockchain-based gaming, Myspace co-founder Chris DeWolfe believes adoption is on the way as the business model inherently provides players more control over their in-game experiences.DeWolfe, who is now the CEO of game development firm Jam City, told Cointelegraph that “the quality of the game and how developers interact and engage with players to set expectations” could eventually change the perception of skeptics. Jam City founder and CEO Chris DeWolfe. Source: Jamcity.comThe former Myspace CEO also compared the advent of Web3 gaming to the early days of Web2. According to DeWolfe, many analysts were skeptical of the viability of Web2 advertising and business models:“They also weren’t sure about the quality of user-generated content and if it would be interesting, so there were naturally concerns over adoption. However, MySpace is really a perfect example of just how powerful user-generated content would become.” Similarly, DeWolfe said that, while there is skepticism about the current gameplay quality and adoption rates in blockchain games, the industry will flourish as games become more fun and interesting:“It’s early days, but we are encouraged by what we’re seeing and confident that blockchain games will continue to gain traction if they are interesting and fun to play.” Back in 2021, Jam City launched its blockchain division and released the blockchain game “Champions: Ascension.” According to DeWolfe, the game focuses on community engagement going as far as inserting one of the most active members into the game’s lore. DeWolfe also highlights that blockchain-based entertainment will be a platform that dominates socialization and commerce in the future. “We predict it will be the dominant place where we all socialize, are entertained and conduct commerce,” said DeWolfe. Related: Blockchain gamers see playing NFT games as a potential full-time job, says new survey Meanwhile, Japanese game manufacturer Sega is looking to include nonfungible tokens in its Super Game project that aims to link multiple games. According to Kelly, he has been keeping an eye on blockchain for six years and has seen its potential.“I have developed a growing curiosity on how it will play a role in space development which is something I would love to be a part of,” said Kelly. The drop sold 3,333 NFTs and collected $500,000 in sales which will go to the nonprofit Global Empowerment Mission (GEM) to help people affected by the war in Ukraine: “The Ukraine crisis is something I hold very close to my heart which is why we will be donating 100% of the proceeds from the initial sale through GEM in support of Ukrainian relief.”While Kelly admits that there are many other ways to help, the astronaut is thankful that launching an NFT collection allowed him to help victims of the crisis. “I feel grateful to be launching a project at a time that allows me to support them in a way I may have not been able to do on my own,” said Kelly.Kelly also hopes that his entry into the world of NFTs may encourage other astronauts to explore the industry as well. He told Cointelegraph: “NFTs can offer astronauts a new outlet for sharing their experiences as opposed to posting this on the internet where it can quickly be lost in the shuffle.” Related: Nifty News: Hyundai partners with Meta Kongz, Activision surveys on NFTs, and more Meanwhile, a Web3 initiative called Reli3f raised $1.5 million for Ukrainian aid efforts. Shopify Bitcoin payments integration triggers legal questions from the community

Following the announced integration of the payment app Strike with e-commerce platform Shopify to accept Bitcoin (BTC) through the Lightning Network, the crypto community raised concerns over the legal implications of the move. Crypto researcher Matt Ahlborg believes that the event is a very significant development for BTC as it allows the offloading of BTC without the need to go through the know-your-customer (KYC) process. What Jack Mallers is really saying is that you will be soon be able to offload your Bitcoins in the real world without KYC’ing through an exchange first. If this is true, it is actually an extremely substantive and important development for Bitcoin.— Matt Ahlborg (@MattAhlborg) April 7, 2022However, lawyer Kevin Thompson pointed out in a reply that the event is likely to make regulators frustrated. Being able to spend BTC without going through KYC enables users to dump BTC and avoid taxes according to Thompson. He predicts that regulators may respond to the event by “creating reporting requirements for Shopify.” Glennhodl, a Twitter user, also thinks that the government may take steps to address the issue of offloading BTC in major stores without doing KYC. However, he notes that while regulators can try to fight it, they won’t be able to really stop it. Not to shit on the parade but…I’d be absolutely stunned if the US govt. just accepts you walking into any major store and spending #bitcoin KYC-free.Ultimately they can’t stop it, but I’m pretty sure they’re gonna fight it.The King’s gambit is the perfect metaphor.— Glenn ‘$100k in May’ Hodl (@glennhodl) April 8, 2022

David Hood suggests not taxing low-value transactions. In a tweet, he commended the recent development but also explained that more people would “take advantage” of the integration if there are no taxes on the BTC purchases under $600.Related: Singaporean fintech adds Bitcoin payments for merchants with BitPay partnershipBack in February, e-commerce giant eBay also hinted at the integration of crypto payments with its platform. In an interview, eBay CEO Jamie Iannone said that the company is eyeing different payment methods as they process billions of dollars in volume within their platform.Meanwhile, the New York Digital Investment Group (NYDIG) recently launched a program that enables employees within participating companies to get paid in BTC. Through a Bitcoin Savings Plan, employees have the option to take a part of their pay in BTC without paying any transaction costs.

Starbucks announces NFT initiative as union-busting controversy continues

Nonfungible tokens (NFTs) have seen their fair share of controversy, but now they have found their way into the midst of the battle between multi-billion dollar corporations and workers trying to unionize their workplaces in the United States. On his first day back as the CEO of Starbucks, Howard Schultz promised additional worker benefits to workers and digital innovation using NFTs. In a partner open forum, Schultz mentioned that “sometime before the end of the calendar year, we are going to be in the NFT business.”The announcement received its fair share of backlash. In a tweet, user smchatter1 wrote that “corporations could just pay employees living wages instead of burning profits to maintain illusions.” Michael Lama also criticized the move:”and here is how we’re going to try to dupe, scam, and milk even more money out of our employees”— Michael Lama (@LamaLamaRedPjma) April 5, 2022While integrating NFTs may seem like a progressive move, some believe that it’s a way to distract people from the company’s actions against the formation of unions. An hour after the announcement, Starbucks fired Laila Dalton, a union leader who had worked for the company for more than three years. In an interview, Dalton said that managers were constantly harassing her for being the leader of a union. “I’m always expecting it because I’m harassed every single day,” Dalton said.Efforts to unionize stores are gaining ground in the United States. On April 1, the Starbucks Roastery at New York’s Chelsea market became the tenth unionized Starbucks in the United States. First Roastery and tenth union Starbucks in the U.S. We are #unionstrong pic.twitter.com/XByqnJ6CEn— SBWorkersUnited (@SBWorkersUnited) April 1, 2022

Furthermore, Amazon workers in Staten Island recently won the vote to become the first U.S. Amazon union, a move that has been seen by many labor politics observers to be a significant victory for labor in the United States.Schultz has been very vocal against unions. In the partner meeting, he described Starbucks as “A pro-partner company. A company that does not need someone in between us and our people.” He also claimed that companies throughout the country are “being assaulted in many ways by the threat of unionization.”Despite this supposed threat of unionization, Starbucks made record profits in Q4 of 2021 while employees shared concerns over unhealthy and unpredictable schedules in addition to benefits problems and low pay.Back in March, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) issued a complaint against the coffee company and accused it of targeting workers who wanted to form unions. According to the NLRB, employees have the right to seek improvements and form unions. Cornele Overstreet, an NLRB director, said that “employees have the right to work together to improve their working conditions, including by forming a union.”Related: Nifty News: Solana NFT sales pass $1.6B, wash trading on LooksRare and moreBack in March 2022, Ethereum (ETH) founder Vitalik Buterin also expressed worries about the original egalitarian digital economy vision of the Ethereum blockchain being overtaken by entities motivated by greed.
