Hackers take over CoinDCX Twitter account, promote fake XRP ads

The official Twitter account of India-based crypto exchange CoinDCX has been hacked and used by the exploiters to post fake XRP promos partnered with phishing links in an attempt to scam the exchange’s followers. Responding to the attack, the official customer support handle of CoinDCX flagged the exploit and warned its users not to click any links or messages coming from the compromised account. According to the exchange, they are working to recover the account and will be sharing updates with their followers very soon. At the time of writing, the hackers have been retweeting the official posts of Ripple Labs CEO Brad Garlinghouse to make their scam look legitimate. While doing that, the scammers reply to crypto tweets with scam links. Users who click on the links posted on the account are at risk of losing their assets from the hacker’s scheme. If the issue is not resolved soon, the losses may become severe as the official Twitter account currently has over 230,000 followers.Related: Hackers try to sell NFT of Belarusian leader’s supposed stolen passportEarlier this month, the Twitter account of one of the Big Four accounting firms, PwC Venezuela, was also compromised and flooded with fake XRP token giveaways and was filled with phishing links to a fraudulent Ripple event using Garlinghouse’s images as their thumbnails. On the same day, an Elon Musk giveaway scam plagued an official YouTube account owned by the government of South Korea. The account was compromised and renamed SpaceX Invest as it posted fake videos of Musk talking about crypto.

Metaverse firm implements NFTs into its Minecraft and GTA 5 servers

Despite Minecraft creator Mojang Studios being against the integration of nonfungible tokens (NFT), a Metaverse-focused firm managed to introduce NFTs into several games including its own Minecraft server. In an interview with Cointelegraph, Oscar Franklin Tan, the Chief Financial Officer of blockchain gaming firm Enjin, and MyMetaverse CEO Simon Kertonegoro shared how they were able to connect the dots and implement NFTs into Minecraft without violating its terms and conditions. According to Kertonegoro, Minecraft’s rules on NFTs have been about protecting players from negative experiences, and many servers have violated these rules. However, the executive highlighted that within their own servers, they are able to introduce NFTs without violating the game’s guidelines. They do this by not having any pay-to-win NFTs and making their best NFTs free to earn. He explained that: “We wanted to show Mojang that it could be done in a way that benefited them and benefited their player base and benefited the gaming industry as a whole. It’s obviously not you know, it’s not the fastest way to get people jumping in your server. […] But we knew that that was the right way to do it.”Tan also weighed in on the topic and noted that Enjin supports MyMetaverse’s attempt to get into a conversation with Mojang studios as the firm’s NFT-integrated Minecraft server has been around for four years even before Minecraft placed its ban on NFTs. The executive also pointed out that even China, a country that’s outrightly against cryptocurrencies has expressed its interest in supporting NFTs. “If it works for the Chinese government, then why not Minecraft,” he mentioned. Related: Minecraft ban ‘hypocritical’ and NFTs are inclusive — Animoca’s Yat SiuApart from Minecraft, the NFTs created by MyMetaverse also have an interoperability aspect and can be used in other games like in the firm’s Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTAV) server and its own massively multiplayer online (MMO) game, Infinity Realm. Kertonegoro explained that: “These different games, read the user’s wallet, see that they own the NFT and provide them different benefits in the games. […] In Minecraft, this NFT is a sword. In GTA the NFT is a car and in Infinity Realms, the NFT is a house.” In addition to this, Tan also expressed his firm belief that having NFTs that work in various games is an important cornerstone for the development of the Metaverse. He said that: “Interoperability forms a greater community. It forms the foundation of what we now call the Metaverse, something we’ve been trying to build since 2018.”As the NFTs run on Efinity, a Polkadot parachain developed by Enjin, Kertonegoro also highlighted that their NFTs will have a good effect on Polkadot’s broader ecosystem. “The ecosystem could only grow through adopters innovating. And that’s what we’re doing, really,” he said.

DeData 2022: The advantages of decentralization in Web3

With the convenience of centralization seemingly threatening the original crypto vision, decentralization will still help escape a potential dystopian future, according to a panel discussion at the DeData Salon 2022 conference held in Berlin, Germany. Cointelegraph’s editor-in-chief Kristina Cornèr moderated a panel discussion dubbed “Shaping The Next Economic Era With Web3 Technology.” Panelists included Paul Claudius, the co-founder of DIA; Hoon Kim, the chief technology officer of the AStar Network; Matt Gurbiel, growth manager at Redstone Finance and Riccardo Lamanna, the founder of OpenQ.Cornèr, Lamanna, Gurbiel, Kim and Claudius at the DeData Salon 2022While the panel discussed various topics, one of the highlights was the decentralization of Web3. Cornèr asked the panelists to share their perspectives and stances on the topic and what advantages decentralization brings to the table. Responding to the question, Claudius pointed out that decentralization is imperfect when it comes to the technological side of things. However, the Web3 executive believes that it is already working in terms of governance and cited decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) as an example. Claudius explained that: “On the governance level, I believe decentralization we see today is already working, at least partially because there are so many people building and everyone can take a role in the governance process.”Kim also gave his thoughts, mentioning that he equates decentralization with the word “freedom,” but despite this, the executive believes that there should be a balance between centralization and decentralization in Web3. He said: “There’s definitely value in centralization for certain things. So making everything decentralized is like a kind of total anarchy. And there’s also the other way around where total centralization is essentially a dictatorship.”When asked about the percentages on which he would pick a split between decentralization and centralization, Kim chose to give a thirty to seventy percent split in favor of centralization. According to Kim, a majority of people will still choose centralization because of the conveniences that it offers. Related: CV Summit 2022 panel: The importance of accessibility and community educationGurbiel offered what he describes as a more philosophical perspective on the topic. According to the executive, decentralization is a way to avoid a dystopian future controlled solely by corporations. He explained that: “I think this is the big hope behind decentralization. It’s so that we can identify those places in society [and] in the world in general that hold too much power and be able to offset them by decentralizing the tech stack, decentralizing the power, the voting power.”Meanwhile, Lamanna circled back to the entire theme of the DeData conference, which is data ownership in the Web3 economy. Lamanna highlighted that decentralized data ownership can prevent data breaches like the Cambridge Analytica incident where user data has been exploited.

Community celebrates the Merge by dropping ETH-inspired art and music

As the Merge successfully shifted the Ethereum network to proof-of-stake (PoS), the ETH community seized the opportunity to celebrate by dropping artworks and music inspired by Ethereum. Nonfungible token (NFT) artist Beeple, the creator of one of the most expensive NFTs ever sold, celebrated the Ethereum Merge by publishing an illustration that shows a massive Ethereum logo that seemed to slowly form, assisted by what looks like scientists. Another community member who makes art influenced by street art and illustration dropped a moving artwork showing a static visual effect over a couple of Ether (ETH) logos. Adding a sense of celebration to the artwork, the creator wrote a description that said, “the time has come.”Meanwhile, an NFT collection dubbed I Survived the Merge featured cute saplings saying funny words like “the Merge was my idea” or “Merge Deez.” Earlier this month, the ETH Pandas collection dropped NFTs of various artworks featuring the animal that the community chose to represent the merge — the Panda. Apart from artworks, a community member decided to add nostalgia into the mix by creating a music video for a Merge-inspired song. Musician Jonathan Mann told highlights of the history of Ethereum through a song. With lyrics like “though the road was long, we carried on” and “carbon footprint is all gone,” Mann celebrated the Merge with his musical prowess. ✨THE OFFICIAL MERGE SONG✨https://t.co/uefE1JuCdh the NFT of the song(auction closes at 9/22 @ 3pm) pic.twitter.com/uuRdHID4om— Jonathan Mann (@songadaymann) September 15, 2022Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, tweeted a message to thank everyone that helped make the Merge happen. Greeting the community, Buterin highlighted that the Merge is a massive moment for the Ethereum ecosystem and said that the community should feel proud on this day. Related: Breaking: Historic day for crypto as Ethereum Merge to proof-of-stake occursBack in June, community members also hyped the Ropsten Testnet Merge that was a prerequisite to the actual Merge that happened today.
