Worldwide Webb founder explains the role interoperability will play in Web3

On Nov. 11, NFT Steez, a bi-weekly Twitter Spaces hosted by Alyssa Expósito and Ray Salmond, met with Thomas Webb, the founder of the interoperable avatar game Worldwide Webb, to discuss the integration of interoperability in Web3 and the Metaverse. By definition, interoperability is a feature of Web3 whereby a product or system can work seamlessly across platforms with other products or services. Webb defines interoperability simply as “creating a token— a nonfungible token (NFT)” since, at its most basic level, no one can control it besides the creator. But how does interoperability function presently in Web3, and what is its potential impact? Executing interoperability the “right” way When discussing how interoperable applications can create a profound impact, Webb described the creativity he has seen from NFT communities and brands.Whether it comes from “creating a product, creating ideas, or creating experiences,” Webb believes that enabling the creation of intellectual property (IP) allows users to display their loyalty and in other ways, their achievement.Interoperability also seems to function in tandem with token-gated experiences, according to Webb. In essence, users can get closer to authentic experiences by using the token they hold as an access pass to attend events and receive perks. This integration enables brands to cross-collaborate, reach their users and create a proliferation of value, or as Webb says, “infinite value.” Related: NFT Steez and Lukso co-founder explore the implications of digital self-sovereignty in Web3Interoperability applications across sectors “Interoperability could be the backbone of everything,” stated Webb when asked about the sectors interoperability could seep into. For Webb, the more transparent and data-driven platforms can be, will yield more collaboration and engagement across tech companies. Ultimately, Webb believes that e-commerce, creative experiences and even concepts like identity and self-sovereignty will be impacted by the concept of interoperability. However, even with interoperability as a cornerstone of Web3, Webb did express the inevitability of risk and challenges associated with creating a standard that suits all countries. According to Webb, the presence of centralized regulatory bodies could continue to inhibit experimentation and growth. To hear more from the conversation, tune in and listen to the full episode of NFT Steez and make sure to mark your calendar for the next episode on Dec. 2 at 12 pm EST.The views and opinions expressed here are solely those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Cointelegraph.com. Self-sovereignty in the creator economy and Web3 — Is there room for both?

On Oct. 28, NFT Steez, a bi-weekly Twitter Spaces hosted by Alyssa Expósito and Ray Salmond, met with Web3 content writer, Julie Plavnik to discuss the importance of self-sovereignty while building a digital identity in Web3. Plavnik references author Gavin Wood when describing Web3 and says that “communication” is a core tenant in the subsequent iteration of the internet. “Web3 is the communication of encrypted channels between decentralized identities,” Plavnik affirms. According to Plavnik, the emerging concept of Web3 placed a magnifying glass on user data and ownership, especially concerning the creator economy. Plavnik describes the creator economy as a place with “no entry barriers or casting.”During the show, Plavnik explores how users are coming around to the notion that they can potentially monetize from their individuality in Web3, but she also questions how they can maintain their self-sovereignty? Awakening self-sovereign identity in Web3When speaking to Plavnik regarding how self-sovereignty is intertwined with Web3, there was no hesitation in explaining that the core tenet of Web3 is to uphold a self-sovereign identity — meaning decentralization is vital. Decentralization, Plavnik explains, is fundamental to ensuring that user data is rightfully controlled and owned by no third party. However, not all users have the level of awareness or interest to understand this. Understandably so, as Plavnik describes the fact that Web3 features, protocols and platforms are still in “its infancy.” Despite being in an experimental and developmental stage, Web3 has also shed light on how the creator economy can continue to evolve and minimize intermediaries. Through the use of blockchain technology and decentralized platforms, users are beginning to build their brands without intermediaries and networks that profit from users’ data.Related: NFT Steez and Lukso co-founder explore the implications of digital self-sovereignty in Web3 As a creator, Plavnik explained how maintaining self-sovereignty in Web3 is “exciting” because it already serves as a way to build a “blockchain resume” sort-to-speak, whereby users can readily track and find all their interactions, participations, and engagement in a domain, for example. In the future, Plavnik expects NFT domains to be an attractive feature even though the current users are limited to only facets of their digital identity based on their crypto wallet. Plavnik posits that an NFT domain can give the user more dynamic freedom in which information they want to disclose, and which digital identities will serve for different purposes. To hear more from the conversation, tune in and listen to the full episode of NFT Steez and make sure to mark your calendar for the next episode on Nov. 11 at 12 pm EST.The views and opinions expressed here are solely those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Cointelegraph.com. NFT Steez and Cryptoys CEO discuss the future of toys within Web3 environments

On Oct. 14, NFT Steez, a bi-weekly Twitter Spaces hosted by Alyssa Expósito and Ray Salmond, met with the founder of Cryptoys, Will Weinraub to discuss the current role of play and toys in regard to their integration with nonfungible tokens and Web3 as a whole. Weinraub believes that the act of play is “not restricted to children” and believes that as adults, “we still crave the element of play throughout life.” According to Weinraub, through the development of technology, “play has evolved.” Nonfungible tokens, especially in gaming, have highlighted this layer of ownership through play.Technology will continue to evolve “play”Weinraub and Cryptoys theorize that “adults are just looking for ways to feel like kids again.” Keeping the question of “how does play evolve” at the forefront, Weinraub says this is a core tenet of his experience with the evolution of play. From action figures to watching his children build virtual worlds in Roblox, Weinraub emphasized how profoundly the internet has catalyzed an evolution in play and gaming. Players are no longer limited within the confines of their neighborhoods or geographic locations, according to Weinraub. Weinraub stressed that the content of gaming is “very, very, different” and it leans more toward “social play,” regardless of geographic barriers when compared to the gaming of previous decades. When asked about concerns of children and young adults’ comfort level with their digital interactions in contrast to their real-life social interactions, Weinraub acknowledged that the situation exists. However, he said that while it can “impact some people, it can amplify some of that as well.” The evolution of gaming seems to be turning toward more “social play” and, in many ways, it could be designed to “enhance communication skills,” posits Weinraub. Related: Crypto Unicorns founder says P2E gaming is in a long ‘maturation phase’The future of gaming and cryptocurrencyWhen asked about the role in-game cryptocurrencies and tokenomics play in blockchain gaming, Weinraub said, he firmly believes that they are an “important foundation of blockchain gaming.” A level of “exuberance” was displayed when play-to-earn models were first created and tested and Weinraub commended the pioneers who initially navigated these uncharted waters. The sector is likely to develop “very fertile grounds over the next year or so” and Weinraub believes that there eventually will be a “relaunch of token-based economies and gaming in a much healthier, sustainable way.”When discussing in-game tokens and their current use, Weinraub pointed to how the present state of the “Web3 economy is based on tokenization.” Regarding the next generation adopting and interacting with tokenization and ownership, Weinraub described how it’s “incredibly important and in the right way.” To hear more from the conversation, tune in and listen to the full episode of NFT Steez and make sure to mark your calendar for the next episode on Oct. 28 at 12 pm ET.The views and opinions expressed here are solely those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Cointelegraph.com. What is regenerative finance (ReFi) and how can it impact NFTs and Web3?

On Sept. 30, NFT Steez, a bi-weekly Twitter Spaces hosted by Alyssa Expósito and Ray Salmond, met with Mashiat Mutmainnah to discuss how regenerative finance (ReFi) can provide more accessibility and inclusivity to blockchain technology. As a “mission-driven movement,” Mutmainnah explains that ReFi enables users to redefine their relationship with the current financial system and their relationship with finance and wealth. Currently, in many countries, millions of people lack basic, equitable access to the financial services that would allow them to meet their daily needs. What if there were newer models that could sustainably alleviate this? According to Mutmainnah, ReFi can redefine what money means and how it’s used. What is the impact of ReFi? Mutmainnah emphasized that ReFi brings awareness to how the present financial systems operate in an “extractive” and “exploitative” manner. She also drew a comparison to fast fashion by explaining that what enables a user to purchase a shirt for $5 comes at the expense of a child laborer. These “extractive” systems are no longer working for people since a core tenet of ReFi is equitable accessibility and distribution. Mutmainnah explained that often ReFi is seen as synonymous to climate, and while that is a pillar, ReFi has enabled “tangible and accessible use-cases.” Users can “plugin” and participate in models and systems that can increase their overall prosperity and that of the ecosystem. Therefore, ReFi can be considered a way of triangulating elements of sustainability via “stabilizing” the climate and “biodiversity,” while also keeping equitable access within global communities. This has the potential to create new financial models and systems that can increase prosperity. As Mutmainnah puts it:”ReFi is helping folks change the way they relate to money.” Related: NFT Steez and Lukso co-founder explore the implications of digital self-sovereignty in Web3Can Web3 and NFTs be used for social and public good? When asked whether NFTs could be used for social and public good, Mutmainnah referenced a pilot program that involved a “loyalty NFT rewards program.” Akin to Starbucks’ latest NFT loyalty program, Mutmainnah explained how a similar scheme could yield positive and sustainable benefits. For example, imagine purchasing an NFT that can grant the holder one free coffee for 10 days. In these models, NFTs can yield more economically feasible benefits than buying the item while also bringing more awareness to the good or service.Contrary to the hype and speculation circulating NFTs in 2021, more creators and platforms are expanding and exploring practical use cases from peer-to-peer and peer-to-business initiatives. However, that does not mean adoption comes with ease. According to Mutmainnah, beyond NFTs, there are many “infrastructure pieces” to explore, including building out more dynamic products that enable this. Mutmainnah explained that it’s a dance of sorts between “making a product frictionless” for seamless adoption and empowering the user to be an “advanced” user that takes full “ownership of their assets.”To hear more from the conversation, tune in and listen to the full episode of NFT Steez and make sure to mark your calendar for the next episode on Oct. 7 at 12 pm EST. NFT Steez and Lukso co-founder explore the implications of digital self-sovereignty in Web3

Sovereign identity has been a hot topic in blockchain and cryptocurrency, especially with the rise of the creator economy. Currently, there are two types of digital identities. One is federated and centralized whereby data is in the control of the service provider. Self-sovereign digital identity is often cited as a human right that can reclaim agency using blockchain technology, but what frameworks exist that aid in governing it?On Aug. 2, NFT Steez, a bi-weekly Twitter Spaces hosted by Alyssa Expósito and Ray Salmond, met Marjorie Hernandez, the co-founder of LUKSO and The Dematerialized to discuss the state of blockchain-based identities and “Universal Profiles.” According to Hernandez, in the future, “everything will have a digital identity.” Onboarding into the digital realm should be frictionless for sovereign “Universal Profiles”During the interview, Hernandez explained the paradigm shift between centralized platforms to a more “platform-less future” and stressed that users need to be in control of their identities and creation on more “agnostic platforms,” where the can own their intellectual property via “Universal Profiles.” Lukso’s integration of Universal Profiles enables users and creators to reclaim their identities and issue their IP in a symbiotic manner between creator and user. According to Hernandez, the Universal Profile can be seen as a personal operating system (OS) whereby one can authenticate themselves, but also send, receive and create assets. As Hernandez puts it, Universal Profiles are a “Swiss Army type tool that is serving so many purposes for the user.” Related: Web3 is crucial for data sovereignty in the metaverseBlockchain-based identities in Web3Understably, the emphasis of identity within Web3 began to spark up again when 2D profile pic (PFP) NFTs began to emerge. This surge was framed as a means to represent and identity oneself as well as a flex, or expression of ego. For some, their physical and social identities were traded for their newly adopted digital avatars. However, Hernandez argues that while some perceive digital as masking one’s true self, she believes that in a “decentralized digital environment,” people will be emboldened “to move beyond these predispositions” and express one’s “true real self.” The basis of Hernandez’ thesis is that blockchain-based identity is not only verifiable but gives users 100% control of their data, identity and IP. When asked by a listener what communities should be doing to ensure the standards surrounding self-sovereignty and that users are no longer “consumers” but active co-participants in the ecosystem, Hernandez simply said, “I think it’s just being co-creator, right? And you start building with it.” Tune in and listen to the full episode tune in here to NFT Steez and make sure to mark your calendar for the next episode on Sept.16 at 12 pm EST.
